A Fall Haircare Regimen for Relaxed & Natural Hair

Written by Samara on September 2, 2009

FL_autumn_leavesWith Autumn(fall) right around the corner it is time to change up your haircare routine a bit. The cold weather is surely approaching and African American hair will need more moisture due to the changing weather and the artificial heat that will introduce dry air to the home.

So what do we do to maintain a healthy moisture balance despite the exposure to cold and hot dry air?

We need to moisturize more often, condition more often, and begin wearing protective styles!

Create yourself an Autumn Haircare Kit to care for your hair:

Collect the following items:

  • A daily detangling moisturizer such as the Curls Milkshake
  • A deep conditioner
  • A wide tooth comb
  • A heavy cream such as shea butter or the Curls Whipped Cream
  • A light oil such as jojoba, coconut, or olive oil
  • A sulfate free shampoo
  • Hair clips
  • Metal free elastic bands
  • Bun dome(Mesh kind)
  • Satin scarf, pillow, or bonnet

These items will be the holy grail for your hair over the next couple months. You will be using these same items in your winter haircare kit, but the way in which you use them will change slightly.

The first thing to remember is to wash your hair at least 2 times per week with your sulfate free shampoo. Lather only once. For removing product buildup, clarify the hair with theĀ  Come Clean shampoo by Kinky-Curly. If the buildup is extreme, mix the shampoo with one tablespoon of baking soda. Condition your hair every time you shampoo and deep condition your hair biweekly to prevent damage and to moisturize and seal the hair shaft. Following your conditioning treatment, apply a moisturizer to damp hair. Detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb if needed, apply your heavy cream from root to tip and proceed with your protective style.

For your protective style, you can wear your hair in a bun, two-strand twist, etc. Read more on Protective Styles for Black hair.

Also make sure you moisturize your hair daily, and oil your ends every night. Sleep in a satin bonnet or scarf. Yes, I know this may sound repetitive, but it is a very important step to achieve long growing hair.

With the change of every season our haircare regimen should change also to ensure that the proper healthy moisture balance is always maintained, thus resulting in longer, stronger, healthy, thick hair!
