A visit to the local beauty supply

Written by Samara on June 21, 2009

My visit to the local hair store is far more unique than the average African American female because of how conscientious I am about my hair and what I put in it. I know that some products that I suggest on my site can be purchased at your local beauty supply such as the Organic Root Stimulator products, but for the most part the majority of the items I suggest can not be picked up locally.

My normal visit to the local beauty supply usually consist of me picking up hair accessories such as hair clips, a hair bonnet, conditioning cap, wide tooth comb, spray bottle, etc. I never purchase actual hair products because about 98% of the products on the shelf are all the same meaning they are all made with the same base. All the greases and hair lotions are made with a mineral oil or petroleum base. I venture over to the natural hair section to see if I can pick up a product I can use for my twist and to my surprise the products are beeswax based! So now I find that I am limited to purchasing my hair products online unless my favorite hair product distributors (CURLS) will start distributing their products locally. At least Kinky Curly is located locally when I need to replenish my Curling Custard supply.

The point of my blog post is when you become more product conscientious about the health of your hair whether you are natural or relaxed, you will discover that most products that are best for your hair will be found online. You will find that your visits to the local beauty supply will decrease dramatically.

The local beauty supply is usually full of products made with cheap, damaging oils and waxes that will not benefit our hair at all. We need products made with our hair in mind, and if you are serious about the health of your hair and gaining length you won’t be afraid to shell out the extra penny to do so. Black women spend hundreds of dollars at the local beauty salon getting their hair styled. We also spend hundreds at the local beauty supply trying to find a miracle product that will work for us often leading in disappointment. Love your hair and do what’s best for it. Don’t poison it, but nuture it. My hair has never felt better once I eliminated cheaply made hair products from my haircare regimen.

It is important as women that we read the labels and not just grab the first bottle or product off the shelf because the lady behind the counter is just trying to make a buck. Be sure that we know what we are putting in our hair. You wouldn’t eat motor oil would you? So don’t do it to your hair.
