Black Haircare Kit – Relaxed Hair
Written by Samara on October 8, 2009Today’s article focuses on what to include in a haircare kit for relaxed hair. The following items will help African American women hair grow their relaxed tresses long, healthy, strong, and beautiful. If your hair is natural please see the Black Haircare Kit – Natural Hair article.
Items needed:
- Sulfate Free Cleanser
- Rinse-Off Conditioner (ONLY for extremely dry hair)
- Deep Conditioner
- Daily Moisturizer
- A good oil
Natural black hair is naturally dry and when a chemical relaxer is applied to the hair it causes the hair to become even drier. Relaxed hair needs to be pampered and handled with care to achieve it’s maximum growth potential. When your hair is relaxed the key to gaining length is well conditioned and moisturized hair.
A Sulfate Free Cleanser is the best possible cleanser for relaxed hair. Relaxed hair is already dry so you do not need anything that has the potential to strip and dry it out even further. A sulfate free shampoo is gentle enough for your relaxed hair and it cleanses the hair with out stripping it.
RECOMMENDED SULFATE FREE CLEANSERS: Kinky Curly Come Clean Shampoo, Curls Curlicious Curls Cleansing Cream, Curls Pure Curls Clarifying Shampoo, Giovanni Shampoo Deep Moisture Smooth As Silk
A Rinse-Off Conditioner is needed only when you are co-washing your hair. Co-washing should only be done if your hair is extremely dry to restore the moisture balance. I do not recommend the use of instant conditioners used in any other way in relaxed hair. Instant conditioners do not sufficiently condition chemically treated hair. Relaxed hair must be deep conditioned every time you shampoo when your hair is relaxed to strengthen and moisturize your chemically treated hair.
RECOMMENDED RINSE-OFF CONDITIONERS: Curls Coconut Sublime Moisturizing Instant Conditioner, Curls Milkshake, Curly Q’s Curly Q Milkshake, Giovanni Conditioner Deeper Moisture Smooth As Silk
RECOMMENDED DEEP CONDITIONERS: Giovanni Conditioner Deeper Moisture Smooth As Silk, Curls Curl Ecstasy Hair Tea Deep Conditioner, Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Pack, Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise, Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment(For extreme breakage and shedding only)
Your Daily Moisturizer must be free of the following ingredients: lanolin, petroleum, mineral oil, and beeswax. These cheap oils and waxes can clog the pores and prevent the absorption of moisture. The first 3 ingredients in a good hair product are usually water, glycerin (sorbitol), and oil (coconut, jojoba, etc.). Moisturize your hair twice a day paying close attention to the ends.
RECOMMENDED MOISTURIZERS: Curls Milkshake, Curly Q’s Curly Q Milkshake, ORS Carrot Oil Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Cream, or Butter, Shea Butter, Elasta QP Mango Butter
Just like natural hair, relaxed hair must be oiled every night. Following your daily moisturizer apply a light oil to your hair. Also make sure you oil your ends at night. This helps preserve your ends by preventing split ends and breakage so you can gain length.
RECOMMENDED OILS: Organic Virgin Coconut oil, Extra Virgin Olive oil, Jojoba oil
As I stated in the previous article, the items will help you maintain healthy flourishing hair for years to come. You do not have to use the products I recommended if you have found other products that work great for your relaxed. Different products work differently on each head, for all hair is unique. Just be sure that the product you are using follows the characteristics of a good product (i.e. sulfate free shampoo, petroleum free/mineral oil free moisturizer, etc.).
