Protective styles are one of the keys to retaining length during the winter months. Also remember to keep your hair moisturized and deep condition weekly. For more tips be sure to enter the Protective Style Challenge!

Protective Style Challenge 2011-2012

The Protective Styles Challenge has officially started! I am so excited about this years challenge for there are going to be some new and rewarding changes to this years challenge, but to start off, if you are new to my site and don’t know what the Protective Style Challenge is, here’s a recap:

…a protective style is a style that will protect the hair from breakage because it is low maintenance. Leaving the hair alone with low manipulation is the best medicine for longer, healthier hair!

Protective Styles are over and Spring is here!

The Protective Style Challenge has ended as of the 1st of April 2011. How long did your hair grow throughout the winter? Personally I definitely saw some growth with my own hair and I love it. It’s amazing how much your hair can really grow during the winter if you protect it and keep it hydrated. I hope you all had the same results as I had. Longer hair to have fun with in the Spring and Summer is a great reward for diligently caring for your hair properly during the Winter months! So now that the warm, balmy weather has arrived what now? Well, I still promote protective styles, but you can allow your hair to go free more often now.

Here are some tips to carry you through the Spring:

Protect your hair at night: Wear protective styles at night and cover your hair with a satin/silk bonnet or scarf. Plait, twist or put your hair in a bun with the ends tucked to prevent knots, tangles, and breakage. This tip should also be applied during the Summer months.

Moisturize Daily: Just because the Winter air is gone doesn’t mean your hair doesn’t need that vital moisture. Please continue to moisturize your hair and seal your ends with oil.

Deep Condition Weekly: This is VERY important to prevent breakage and to keep your hair’s moisture levels intact. Take it from me. My hair suffered from split ends, fairy knots, and breakage when I used to skip this step. Deep conditioning the hair really does make a difference.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse: Try this remedy once a month to clarify your hair, restore shine, and to smooth the cuticle. The Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse has really helped my hair and it has also helped reduce the amount of fairy knots I’ve gotten.

Protective Styles – Month 1 (December 2010)

Your hair length is a huge factor on how you will style it during the Protective Styles Challenge. Keep in mind that the Protective Style Challenge is not only for natural hair women. It is also for relaxed hair women as well. Relaxed hair needs just as much protection if not more than their relaxed counterparts. So, with that said how long is your hair?

Short (just big chopped hair): You don’t really need to utilize the challenge just yet because your hair is far to short to style it in a protective style. If it is however, at least 2 inches long you can try your wits at finger or comb twists to protect it.

Short to Medium ( about 6 months to a year after big chop – neck to shoulder length): You can utilize a variety of styles such as 2 strand twists, bantu knots, plaits, extenstions, kinky twists, flat twists, cornrows, finger or comb twists to protect the hair.

Medium to Long (about 2 years+ after big chop – longer than shoulder length hair): If you hair is long enough you can now incorporate elaborate buns into your protective style. You can also style your 2-stand twists in a clip, pulled back with ends tucked to protect the hair. You can also use the same styles above to protect your hair.
