Today I am revisiting a past topic known as Fairy Knots, which are single strand knots that appear in the hair of curly/kinky haired women. After months of trial and error I’ve come to the conclusion that the majority of fairy knots come from the following:

split ends

improper detangling technique

wash-in-go styles

afro styles

Spit Ends are the top reason we get fairy knots because the split hairs become tied together creating a single strand knot or as we call them: fairy knots! The best advice I can give is to cut the split ends off to prevent any future knotting.

Improper Detangling Technique can not only cause split ends, but can also cause the hair to knot. You must be gentle and patient when handling your hair. Do not pull, yank, or force the hair with your fingers, a comb or a brush. Don’t detangle dry hair with a comb or brush. Your hair should only be combed when it’s wet and saturated with conditioner(this goes for relaxed hair as well).

Section your hair while it is dry into small sections and remove shed hairs which have a tendency to cause fairy knots by gently detangling your hair with your fingers. Run your fingers down each section and remove all tangles and shed hair. Once you have removed the shed hairs braid or twist that section and move to the next. When you have completed your entire head, cleanse your hair while it’s still in the braids or twists to prevent re-tangling of the hair.

Wash-n-Go and Afro Styles leave the hair open for a mess of fairy knots. The hair can become matted and tangled from sleeping on it, the wind, touching, and just because our hair is naturally curly. If your hair isn’t protected in a protective style or stretched out from wearing a twist out or braid out, it is more prone to fairy knots. I find that when I wear my hair in these styles, it is the worst detangling experience ever and the fairy knots are excessive. Protective styling and stretched hair is the key to reducing the fairy knots as well.

With that said I am currently undergoing gradually ridding my hair of my own split ends which occurred due to past mistakes including wash-n-go styles, improper detangling technique, and failure to deep condition weekly. I now implement the above techniques to work on finding a cure to this issue. In due time I will update you on my progress of eliminating fairy knots permanently.
