Combing Black Hair

Written by Samara on August 26, 2008

shiner-inline.co.ukThis weeks article addresses how black women comb their hair and how we should comb our hair along with what type of combs we should use in our hair.

Remember:

Never ever use a brush in African American hair! It rips the hair directly from your head!

To properly manage black relaxed hair you will need a wide tooth comb and a medium tooth comb. The medium tooth comb is to only be used when your hair has been recently relaxed and the wide tooth comb is for when hair is wet and when you’re closer to the time for a relaxer.

To properly comb the hair always start from the ends and work towards the roots to prevent breaking the hair. Pay attention to the sound to “snaps” and “pops” when using the medium tooth comb. If you hear these sounds or if the hair is hard to get through comb switch to the wide tooth comb immediately to prevent further damage.

It’s also a good idea to apply your moisturizer prior to combing your hair to help soften it. Moisturizer usually has a detangling effect if your hair is tight which will help reduce damaging your hair while combing it.

That is so true! I used a boar bristle brush to wrap my hair and it broke off completely in the back and the sides. Now I am trying DR. Miracle products to help with the breakage

This site as of right now is strictly catered to women with relaxed hair. I can not and will not write about something I don’t know about. I don’t have natural hair.

I really don’t recommend a brush on black hair, but if you must using a very soft boar brush with some hair lotion should help. Also use a wide tooth comb or a pick in your hair, do not use fine tooth combs because it will break your natural curly hair.
