Essence Magazine Hair Care Article: Bad Idea

Written by Samara on October 24, 2008

replacements.comI was reading an article the other day in the Essence magazine about taking care of your daughter’s hair while they were in school. I can’t for life of me remember what months issue is was, but I agreed with most of what they said except for the part about using a brush to stimulate hair growth and to style hair.

I don’t know how much I can stress it to women to avoid using a brush no matter what in African American hair. It rips the hair out! Brushing the hair does more harm than good. If you need to stimulate your scalp try a dry finger massage or use a conditioner with a scalp stimulant in it such as menthol, tea tree oil, or peppermint oil. If you decide to use the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise, then try adding a few drops of tea-tree oil or peppermint oil to the conditioner before applying it to your head to act as a stimulant while you condition.

Please don’t ruin your daughter’s hair by using hair brushes. It’s really a shame when you read these misleading articles in black owned magazines telling millions of women to brush their daughters hair. Every since I’ve seen that article in the Essence magazine I’ve decided to start reading articles regarding black hair care and reviewing them monthly.

Keep your daughter’s hair on her/their head:

Don’t brush the hair!

It is very true that brushes can be very damaging to hair IF they are used excessively and improperly. As someone who has 2 little girls with hair about mid-back length stretched, AND who has gone from “bad” to “good” hair care practices when it comes to their hair, I can say from experience, that it is ok to use a SOFT boar’s bristly brush on your daughter’s hair. Just like with many other things regarding healthy hair care (ie. heat, chemicals, etc), it isn’t the actual USE of the brush it is the MISuse of it that is damaging.

Sounds like it was an intresting article! Happy hair growing!

I will have to disagree with you on the notion of using brushes. No matter how soft the brush is the use of a hair brush is strongly discouraged. There is strong evidence that proves that using a hair brush causes hair breakage. The only hair styling items that should be used in black hair are medium or wide tooth combs and hair picks.
