How to get rid of split ends in black hair
Written by Samara on September 19, 2009
Growing your hair can be a struggle when you have split ends to deal with. How did you get split ends? Should you clip them? Condition them? Or seal them? What’s the best way to treat split ends?
I remember when my hair was relaxed and long and how my hair stylist cared for it. She never clipped my ends every 6 weeks, in fact it was very rare that she clipped it at all! My hair was relaxed, thick, long and healthy and I never had split ends! As I reminiscence on how she cared for my hair I suddenly experienced an epiphany.
“I never had split ends because the use of heat was limited and my hair was deep conditioned every 2 weeks!”
I can’t even remember when she did clip my ends, but it had to be on an “as needed” basis. My hair was not put on a hair trimming schedule that most stylist prefer doing. This practice makes no sense to me personally because our hair grows 1/2 inch per month and clipping the ends this often will prevent the gain of actual length. Instead you should only clip your ends as needed. You can either clip the individual strand with the split ends, or trim the entire head only when it’s needed. If you are caring for your hair properly you will rarely if ever have to clip your ends. More than likely with the proper haircare routine you will only clip your ends every 3, 6, or 12 months if that. To prevent and/or lessen the likelihood of split ends, do the following:
- Deep condition often
- Condition rinse the hair every time you shampoo
- Cleanse the hair weekly
- Moisturize daily
- Seal your ends every night
- Do not comb dry hair
- Sleep with satin bonnet or scarf
- Limit the use of heat in the hair
The above practices will prevent split ends from occurring and help you gain length. Remember, clipping the ends will not make your hair grow! Nothing makes your hair grow, but time and if you care for your hair properly you can grow long, below shoulder length hair.
