How to read black haircare product labels
Written by Samara on September 11, 2009
Today’s article is a quick lesson on how to read the labels on haircare products for African American hair. How do you know what you are really putting in your hair when you purchased that bottle of oil sheen, or hair lotion? Is that product you just purchased really good for your hair type? How do you really know?
When reading a product’s ingredient list, always keep this in mind:
The first 5 ingredients are the most abundant.
This meaning that what ever the first five ingredients are, is what the product is mostly made of. The very first ingredient being the most prominent ingredient, the second being the second most prominent, and so on. Now that you know this, you can use this new bit of information to judge the value of a product, by the quantity of the high quality ingredients they use the most, and not by the company’s often exaggerated claims.
If you read a product label and the first 5 ingredients look something like this:
water, petroleum, mineral oil, glycerin, lanolin…
And they are charging more than $2 for the product. You are getting ripped off.
Look for products containing water, sorbitol or glycerin, a good oil such as coconut, jojoba, olive, etc. as the 1st 5 ingredients. If the product in question is a moisturizer or conditioner make sure your product is free of mineral oil, petroleum, and beeswax. If the product is a shampoo steer clear of any containing sulfates.
Remembering these tips will keep you with healthy growing hair.
