I discovered the wonders of shea butter

Written by Samara on August 11, 2009

shea20butterI recently ran out of my beloved Curls Milkshake and I need to moisturize my natural hair. I tried using the remaining bit of Milkshake and a few mists of water to help moisturize my hair, but as soon as my hair dried. It was dry, meaning hard and dry, even thirsty.

Later that day I applied the Curls Ecstasy Hair Tea Conditioner to my hair with a little water and a bit of Milkshake. My hair was just as dry as before when it finally dried completely.

The following day I decided to use the Quenched Curls Moisturizer into my hair. I really don’t like Quenched Curls as a moisurizer in my 4b hair because it causes shrinkage and it’s not really heavy enough. Lotions and creams work best in my hair for moisture, but I was out of options so I first lightly misted my hair with plain water. I then squirted the Quenched Curls Moisturizer at least 15-20 times and massaged it throughout my hair from root to tips. I detangled my hair gently with a wide tooth comb and then I took some natural raw shea butter and rubbed it in my hands to melt it and applied it to my hair section by section. I combed it one more time and my afro looked absolutely gorgeous.

I thought this was too good to be true so I waited for my hair to dry and a few hours later I touched my hair. My hair still felt soft and moisturized. The following day my hair was still moisturized!

I have fallen in love with shea butter. It seals in the much needed moisture our hair needs to thrive. Sure it doesn’t detangle my hair as good as the Curls Milkshake does, but it holds the moisture in my hair. My fro is fluffy, soft, and radiant!

Shea butter is a must for black women relaxed and especially natural hair. It worked so well when sealing in the moisture. I may start using this for my twist instead of the Curls Whipped Cream entirely!

Hey Samara, have just discovered your blog and think its great – really helpful and personally reasuring since I am currently in the transitioning period going back to natural because of a very upsetting hair loss experience involving a tight weave and long term overprocessing through relaxer. Will definitely try natural shea butter, do you buy it online or it is freely available?
Also just wondering if you have ever tried any ‘Beauty 4 Ashes’ haircare products? Apparently they are the only real 100% natural products available (cannot buy in stores, only online). I would love a review as I am thinking of using them.

I purchased my natural raw shea butter from a hair store in-town. You know the frequent Korean owned stores that market to black women. Out of all of the products they sell, this has been the only one that I found deemed worthy of purchasing. You can always buy it online though.

I never heard of Beauty 4 Ashes until now, but I will review their products for you. Best of luck with your natural hair journey.

I used 100% natural raw shea butter from racosmetics.com. You can always go to your local beauty supply and purchase it. Remember it is yellow in color and has a nutty smell to it.
