Is your water too hard for your hair?
Written by Samara on September 16, 2009Water is something that both natural and relaxed hair loves. It is something that our hair needs to stay soft, healthy, moisturized, and strong. Water is a must in every African American haircare routine, but what if the water you use to shampoo your hair is hard?
Hard water is water that contains high amounts of harsh chemicals such as chlorine. Softer water contains less chemicals and will not strip the hair. In the U.S. our water is treated with these chemicals to make it safe to drink meaning everyone has chemically treated water, but how hard is the water in your home? Is it harsh to your hair?

If you live in an area where the water is hard you can do one of three things:
- Purchase a water filter for your shower head and only shampoo your hair in the shower. (Economy way)
- Purchase a water filter for your entire home. (Expensive way)
- Boil the water you plan to use to shampoo your hair for about 10 minutes prior to using it. Let it cool to a comfortable temperature. Next separate it into two equal parts. Rinse and shampoo the hair with one half of the water. Then rinse your hair clean with the second half. (Cheapest but time consuming way)
You don’t have to follow the above steps if you don’t want, it’s really up to you, but you will feel a difference in the way your hair feels after about a week of using soft water to cleanse and condition it. Your hair will be cleansed by pure water, free of chlorine and other harsh chemicals leaving it softer, shiner, moisturized, and healthy. Soft water is the best water to cleanse the skin and hair of all races no matter the hair type.
