Micro Braids A Hair Growers Disaster

Written by Samara on April 3, 2008

About 2 years ago I got micro braids in my hair and when I removed all of them the hair that came out was enough to make a wig! My hair was extremely damaged and even now, 2 years later, my hair is still trying to repair itself. I will never get micro braids again and I wouldn’t advise anyone else to get them either because they are damaging.

If you are going to get braids make sure the braids aren’t super tight or super skinny. Not only is it time consuming to get out, but braids that are too tight will pull on the hair and cause lots of shedding and breakage. The braids will also cause more severe breakage around the edges of your head which doesn’t look good at all.

I have a friend that just like the singer Brandy wore braids since I known her and when she took them out her hair was very very thin. Her edges were even thinner. She would put the braids in right after she took them back out because the braids thinned her hair out so much that she had to wear braids to look like she actually had hair. She’s now wearing a wig until her hair begins to thicken again and her hair is also not long at all.

Braids don’t make your hair grow and if they are braided too tight and too small they don’t allow your hair to rest either.

If you’re trying to grow your hair out please don’t put micro braids in your hair. You need to be able to condition weekly and moisturize daily and micro braids won’t allow you to do this.

If you do get braids condition your hair with the Aphogee 2-Step Protein Treatment to help strengthen and repair your hair. Then moisturize you hair at least 2-3 times a day with a  good moisturizer..

I must admit my edges are messed up, but I believe it’s due to the over processing of relaxer and also the braids. Now that I don’t relax my hair any more and I don’t get my edges braided it’s growing back little by little. My hair grew a lot while in braids. I’m not saying my hair grew because of the braids but it def wasn’t damaged because I took care of my hair. Right now i’m taking a break from braids because my hair is long enough to do styles.

Every hair style has its ups and downs but the most important thing that we know our hair. What works for one person will not work for the other.

For microbraids, i take it as a general run that you shouldn’t do it if you have relaxed hair
-Natural hair is fragile as it is, more so when it is dry compare to when it is wet because of it lacks oil and moisture. When your hair is relaxed, the bonds in your hair are even more fracture because the natural state of the hair has being altered.

Microbraids should be small as the name suggests but then it doesn’t have to be very small all over. The edges should be a little big large (not significantly so you don’t notice the difference).

The braids should not be too tights, all over the hair but especially around the edges. You do not want to end up making yourself bald.

Brushing/combing while in braids – that should not be an issue as long as your hair is wet/damn when doing that. I spray my hair with water and oil in the morning and night and these are the only times i can comb my hair.

You ever wonder why people will dreads then to grow their hairs longer than the average natural hair diva? They do not need to come their hair (when wet or dry) which reduces breakage and manipulation, all which make it easier for the hair to grow.

All in all, it boils down to the way you care for your hair.

Oh, and if you hair starts to twist at the root, take out the braids or touch up your edges…When the roots are twisted, they put extra weight on your hair (as if the hair extension is not already doing a good job of that)

I want micros. My hairline is damaged due to over processing. I have not had a relaxer for 2 months and will wait another 2 before getting micros. My question is…would it be better to get micro-corn rolls at the hairline (going back about an inch)?
My hair will always be pulled back, because I don’t like it in my face! I would be getting my hairline re-done each month. Micros always grow my hair, but since my hairline is damaged I wanted to know if corn-rolls were better for the front.

    also…

I usually prepare for braids by getting a wash, trim, and Aphogee protein treatment. Is there anything else you recommend?
