Natural Hair: Too Much Heat is Bad for Natural Hair

Written by Samara on February 3, 2009

So what do I mean by too much heat? Well if you are wearing your hair natural or even relaxed for that matter you should play close attention to the heated styling tools you are using in your hair.

Women who’ve decided to wear their hair natural and free of chemicals should take this close in mind if they decided to straighten and curl their hair because using a heated tool that is hotter or is as hot as 300 degrees Fahrenheit  will actual break down and burn the cuticle and alter the natural curl of the hair just like a relaxer does. The hair will never curl back too it’s natural state no matter how much you wash and condition it. If you use heated tools such as a pressing comb, flat iron, curling iron, etc. Keep the temperature at no hotter than 200 degrees to be on the safe side. This goes for women with chemically relaxed hair too. Your hair is already suffered enough alterations from the relaxer you have so you need to take extra care of your hair and be sure to follow these guidelines as well.

Too much heat is bad for natural and chemically treated hair. Those flat irons that gloat about heating up to 400 degrees and higher are actually bad for your hair’s health! Make sure you use a heated tool with a temperature gauge and keep at it 200 degrees or below.  Remember if your hair becomes damaged it will break off and when it breaks off it won’t gain length.

Happy Hair Growing!

OK SO THIS IS WHATS WRONG WITH MY HAIR…ONE SIDE OF MY HAIR IS THICKER CURLIER AND LONGER AND THE OTHER IS SHORTER AND THINNER AND WHEN I WEAR IT NATURALLY CURLY IT DOESNT CURL LIKE THE OTHER SIDE…I DONT USE CHEMICALS N MY HAIR JUST SULFATE FREE SHAMPOO RINSE CONDITIONER AND LEAVE IN CONDITIONERS…
IVE CUT BOTH EVEN PLENTY OF TIMES AND IT ALWAYS HAPPENS THAT ONE SIDE IS THINNER NOT AS CURLY AND SHORTER
SO WHAT DO I DO NOW THAT I REALIZED ITS BROKEN OFF AND DAMAGED
HOW DO I GET IT TO GROW AND HAVE THE SAME GROWTH THICKNESS AND CURL REACTION AS THE OTHER SIDE??

  2. Samara says:

What have you used to damage it? heat? It could just be that you have several different textures on your head, like most African American and multi-racial women do. If your hair is indeed damaged, weekly deep conditioning and protective styles followed by daily moisturizing should help.

WELL YEAH HEAT…I USED TO FLAT IRON IT ALL THE TIME AND USE THE BLOW DRYER
BUT RECENTLY FOR LIKE 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT I HAVE JUST BEEN WEARING IT CURLY LEAVING CONDITIONERS IN IT AND I STRAIGHTENED IT AND WENT ANOTHER UM-TEEN MONTHS W/O STRAIGHTENING IT
AND LIKE I JUST STRAIGHTENED IT 2 WEEKS AGO AND FOUND ITS STILL THE SAME LENGTH AND ONE SIDE HASNT CAUGHT UP WITH THE OTHER
SO IM BACK WEARING IT CURLY AND IDK WHAT IM DOING WRONG TO WERE IT JUST WONT GROW…I LEAVE CONDITIONERS IN IT
I WASH LIKE 2 TIMES A WEEK AND CONDITION WASH USUALLY EVERYDAY TO EVERY OTHER DAY BUILD UP HAPPENS FAST WITH MY HAIR
I USED TO USE GARNIER NOW IM TRYING CANTU ITS BUILDS UP FAST I TRIED DEVA CURLS IT MAKES MY HAIR DRY SO I WANT TO EXPERIMENT WITH KINKY-CURLY AND THE MIXED CHICKS LINE

WHAT SHOULD I USE FOR LIKE DEEP CONDITIONING LIKE JOJOBA OIL OLIVE OIL & MAYO TREATMENTS?

  4. Samara says:

Giovanni Smooth as silk deeper moisture conditioner is a good conditioner. Your hair has heat damage and it is irreparable. You need to stop using the flat iron and blow dryer in your hair. you will also need to grow out the damaged hair and eventually cut it off if you want your hair to curl up and grow at more even lengths.

  5. ITALIAN&BLKCURLS says:

    AW MAN :O(
SO SHOULD I DO THE DEEP CONDITIONER ONCE EVERY WEEK OR IS THAT TOO MUCH?
AND SO DONT U DO THE OIL TREATMENTS AND MAYO TREATMENT?
SHOULD I LIKE WAIT TO CUT IT FOR A WHILE OR JUST CUT OFF LIKE AN INCH OR 2 NOW…CAUSE IF THATS WHY IT WONT GROW THEN ID RATHER GET RID OF IT SOONER THAN LATER…WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?

PS YOUR LIKE THE HAIR GURU…SENT FROM ABOVE LMAO
    THANKS ALOT REALLY!!! <3

I deep condition weekly. You should always deep condition the hair weekly to keep it in tip top shape. Also you can wait or cut it now. It’s really up to what you are comfortable doing. If you are comfortable with cutting your hair then do it sooner. If not then wait until it grows out. Also I prefer the Giovanni conditioner, but it’s up to you and your hair. Try both and see what your hair likes best. Good luck ;)
