Ponytail’s Cause Hair Breakage

Written by Samara on April 13, 2008

Wearing a ponytail daily can cause hair breakage in the front end of your head. I’ve observed a woman whom wore a ponytail everyday and her hair broke off so severely that it looked like someone cut her hair in the front for bangs!

The breakage was caused by the constant pulling of her hair in the front into the ponytail holder. There was no way to even blend this breakage into the rest of her hair. It was broken so badly that the only options were to cut it all off to the length of the broken hair or allow it to stay the same and continue to look as horrible as it did.

It is okay to wear a ponytail from time to time but, the ponytail shouldn’t be extremely tight and it shouldn’t be worn daily. Also if you do decide to wear a ponytail don’t use a elastic ban with the metal piece on it. Use the all elastic ponytail bans that state they will not break your hair and does not contain any metal.

It’s less stressful to the hair to wear the hair down, allowing it to flow free without the stresses of pulling from hair accessories. You should also avoid wearing a ponytail at night while you sleep. Instead wrap your hair and wear a satin scarf or bonnet to prevent breakage.

If you want to grow your hair long don’t start by wearing a ponytail which will cause breakage resulting in short hair in the front and long hair in the back. Grow your hair long and allow your hair a chance. Our hair is delicate and it’s up to us to maintain and keep it on our heads growing long, healthy, and beautiful.

I wear a pony tail and I don’t seem to have any problems because i take down the pony tail every night. I seen a lot of women with long hair after wearing a pony tail. I also seen women that hair has broken off from the pony tail. It really depends on your hair type. Remember, hair has elasticity which it stretches. I keep my hair fairly moisturized (great moisturizer to add) and my hair is growing from front to back. Thanks for listening.

I’ve got quite thick hair, and wear it in a ponytail everyday, with those hairties that have a metal piece on them. And I hate wearing my hair down, because its layered and flicky. And I think my hair has stopped growing from the point at which my ponytail starts.
What can I do to repair it and stop it breaking?

    • Samara says:

Your hair hasn’t stopped growing. It’s only breaking due to the ponytail. What’s worse is you are using a ponytail holder with the metal on it which makes the breakage much more severe. Follow all the steps on this site. See the Grow Long Hair Program. Also you must stop wearing a ponytail if you want you hair to stop breaking. It’s okay to wear a ponytail occasionally, but you should use a metal free holder. Have you ever tried wear your hair in a french roll instead?

So, My problem is that I do wear a ponytail daily!
It’s horrible! My hair has broken in the front and is much longer in the middle and a little shorter than the middle in the back. I would advise NOT to wear a ponytail everyday! For the women who posted before me, you may not see your hair breaking now, but I’m 97% sure that within the next 6 months, it will!

I’ve been wearing my hair in a ponytail everyday since the 6th grade. Now I’m going into 8th grade in the fall. I’m going to get my hair braided with weave next week, so this should help since I won’t have to be pulling and tugging my hair everyday.

But, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to help with my natural hair. Any other styles? Other than a ponytail?

    • Samara says:

The pulling of the ponytail day after day is what is most likely causing the breakage. Opt for a different hair style such as a wrap to stop the breakage. Also try a deep conditioning protein treatment such as the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise to help stop breakage and repair damage.

I have to wear my hair in a ponytail everyday, since I’m in the military. Twists are not secure enough. My hair ends have been braking. I wear soft ponytail holders and I have tried to let the ponytail holder hold the end of my hair and I have tried bobbypins to hold the end of my hair and still get broken ends.
I am heading to Iraq and the heat will be even worse for my hair, since there are no good salons out there.
Are there any good ways to tuck the end of my ponytails so they won’t break? Or a secure stylish twist I can wear with my military caps and berets?

You can purchase a mesh bun to protect your ends. Also invest in some shea butter. It is a natural sunscreen and it will help protect your hair. Have you every tried cornrows? They are another protective style that will prevent breakage and lessen the pull from the ponytail holder.

I find that many women keep their ponytails too long and causes the breakage. Trying to get that tight look is not more important than keeping your hair in good condition.

I’m have been trying and wanting to grow my hair to shoulder length. I’m one who loves length and full hair where I can wear it any way I choose to.
I like wearing my hair sleek or soft wave do. I have going to a Cosmetogy Art salon for the past three years getting a retouch or retouch and semi perimanent/demo. I have getting a wrap set before in the past and it has really lengthen my hair. During my recent visit I wanted to try a different way like getting a long- drawstring ponytail done because I also love to wear a long ponytail that are low or near crown. I have been long over due for relaxer(retouch). I’m been currenty unemployment checking for job or looking for work. I don’t also always have a enough to back every 6-8 weeks. I still enjoy the relaxer but I perfer something Low-Maintence that is not to strong where I can keep it up better. I love long hair styles that are mid-length or shoulder length. I also enjoy ponytails that are hair wrap as a band. I have been getting a hign drawstring styles during my recent visit to the Cosmetogy Salon. I have even been doing it myself at home. Sometime I have worn it this way or I wear extention (track) if I wanted wear my hair longer.
I usualy would Braid a section of my hair to pin a extention or track hair to wear a long hair style. I have been wearing it this way for while between visits. I have been falling a sleep with a track pinned so that I don’t have to put it in the next day. I been wearing some of my hair back twisted and some of the hair down. THis is a long hair style that I want try. I have become so attached to this look because like the way it look on myself. I was a long-hair style worn by a
famous leading singer Beyonce of destiny’s child. It reminded so much of what be nice on myself. I have past and long over due for my touchups (retouches) that my hair has some breakage or split ends. I’m experiencing a something my scalp
showing near my crown that is small-medium round size. I have had to go to a previous hair professional(hairdresser) for consultation about it and she told me to see a dermatogist. When I did the dermatogist check it and told that my hair could grow back but would take several months to a year. He gave me a copy of information on alepecia alerta. I am not sure if that runs in my family. My hair has only been had breakage or splitting due to being past due for my touch ups. He told me that it was nothing I was doing or my hairdresser was doing to cause it. I feel real concerned and a bit confused. I also dismayed and frustrated when I think about it. I really feel a little sad and worry about going to my hairdressor about what can I do grow my hair back where it broke off in that area at the roots. I have a some length to my sides and front that can cover that area up. I do NOT want her to cut that because I NEED that to fix the way I have to. Now, I’m wearing it pinned in a FRENCH ROLL. The mid section and the nape of my neck stops just below my ear. I have trim my hair at the ends myself after I washed and condition my hair every two-three weeks between my last visit for my touch up. It has been five months since my last relaxer retouch. I have had this since September last year. I like to know if I can wear a hair piece or a french roll once I go back to have hair done from her. I also would like to know if I could do a Wrap set still with this condition. I not sure what kind of style to wear it if she does a relaxer retouch on me again. I would like something Low-maintence relaxer were I can keep it up better. What can be do to keep my hair growing to my desire length. I would like to grow it collar to shoulder length! What kind of hair treatment would help with it?

Please follow the tips explained on this site to grow and maintain your hair. The keys to longer hair is moisturizing, protective styling, and deep conditioning often. You should not go to bed with items such as pins with tracks in your hair. This can cause your hair to break. Your hair should be moisturized, sealed with oil, and wrapped or put in a bun. Then covered with a satin or silk bonnet or scarf until the next morning. You cannot be impatient or lazy when it comes to caring for your hair if you want it to grow long. Learn to have patience and make time for your hair to care for it properly. Goodluck
