Question of the Month – December
Written by Samara on December 17, 2008Every month I will add an email to the Black Hair Blog that I’ve received from one of our visitors and my response. This month my email is from a concerned parent regarding her daughter’s hair and the use of a relaxer in her natural hair:
My daughter is 15 and does not have a relaxer on her hair. Her hair is shoulder length, and not too coarse. Right now, she gets her hair pressed and flat ironed at a beauty school. Is this best for her hair or should I let her get a relaxer? I guess what I am trying to say is which process is less damaging?
Thanks!

My response:
It depends on how hot the comb or flat iron is and if she is using a protective moisturizer in her hair before applying the heat. I wouldn’t recommend using a relaxer because it is far more damaging. Chemicals such as a relaxer should only be used to aid in managability.
If you must use chemicals try using a texturizer which will make her texture softer, but it won’t be as damaging as a relaxer or you can just keep it natural!

Even though my site is mainly about caring for relaxed hair (for now), I don’t recommend putting a relaxer in your hair if it is already natural. I will be adding a transitioning from relaxed to natural and a natural hair care section to the site coming 2009 so stay tune for next years new additions!

1[ Reply to this comment ]Good Day:
I have begun a relentless search for reputable info on growing my natural hair long; I’ve been wearing it cut very short, in a Ceasar, for years and years. It’s now time for a change, and at 55 years of age, my hair is in it’s natural form and I have no desire to ruin it; it is is good condition. I SIMPLY WANT IT TO GROW AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! I’ve always wanted to have long hair, but was told it just isn’t genetically possible for me. My hair is lightweight nappy, and when cut down to the “quick” has waves. At this point, I simply want to look as attractive as possible with the option of having long hair for a change.Thank you for your response.

5[ Reply to this comment ]By the way, ORS adding a new type of moisturizer as apart of it’s Hair Loss & Thinning line called the Hair Fertilizer. The ingredients look similar to the ORS Carrot Oil, I think I may try this.
