Relaxer Preparation
Written by Samara on November 13, 2009Preparing for a relaxer isn’t very hard to do, but with these simple steps you will have a better relaxing experience with less breakage and stronger hair in the end. Maintaining relaxed hair requires much attention and patience. Your scalp as well as each strand must be cared for diligently to prevent scalp damage, breakage, and dryness due to the chemical process. Following these steps will help your hair and scalp cope with the relaxer process by strengthening and protecting it prior to application.
- Do not scratch your scalp 24 hours before relaxing the hair because it will cause scalp damage resulting in possible chemical burns and irritation from the relaxer. If itchy scalp is an issue, try rubbing it gently with your finger tips instead or tapping the scalp.
- Do not wash your hair no later than 72 hours before your relaxer. The same issues described above will happen due to your open pores and from scalp manipulation.
- Apply some conditioner to your relaxed ends prior to your relaxer to prevent breakage
- Deep condition your hair a week before your relaxer to strengthen and moisturize your hair
- Co-wash your hair every 3 days with silicone free conditioner 2 weeks prior to your relaxer to increase the moisture balance in your hair.
These simple steps will help your relaxing process run much smoother. You will notice that your hair will be much softer and stronger when applying these steps prior to your relaxer. Relaxed hair must be prepared before being treated with chemicals to strengthen it and help gain and maintain the length.
