Say No to Mineral Oil!

Written by Samara on August 22, 2008

mineral oilI’ve been to beauty supply stores searching for products that can also be used as a good moisturizer for the hair, but to my suprise every  hair creme and lotion contains either mineral oil A.K.A paraffin liquidum, petroleum (a thicker form of mineral oil, or protein. This ingredients prevent absorption of moisture and dry out the hair.

Protein doesn’t prevent moisture absorption, but it tends to dry the hair out if left in the hair. Protein is a key ingredient for healthy strong hair and it can even repair damaged hair and halt breakage and shedding, but it shouldn’t be used in a moisturizer. Protein should only be used in conditioners that you rinse out.

The point is you need to make sure that you pay close attention to the labels on the products you buy to moisturize your hair. Make sure the products do not contain mineral oil(paraffin liquidum), protein of any kind, or petroleum. The first ingredient should always be water followed by either a humercant(soritol or gyclerin for example) or an oil (coconut or olive oil for example). The only products that fit this description is the Ultra Black Hair Creme Lotion or Dew and the Organic Root Stimulator Carrot Oil. I did however discover another moisturizer, but I haven’t been able to locate it since I moved from Tampa, Florida. As soon as I find this moisturizer again I will add it to the list.

It is okay to apply light oil to your hair for a nice shine, but don’t neglect using a good moisturizer as well daily.

It is good that you are using an oil,but you need to incorporate a moisturizer into your hair care regimen to acheive maximum growth and to prevent breakage. Hair oil seals in moisture, but it does not moisturize so my answer is no. It’s not enough. You must moisturize your hair daily with a hair moisturizer containing water as the first ingredient followed by a humercant like sorbitol or glycerin. Then a good oil such as olive oil, jojoba oil etc. I have some products like this listed on the site for your convenience.

The longest my hair has grown is to my shoulders
2yrs. ago while wearing micro twistees/dreds combo, but my hair became very thin. I use also use permanent hair dye, Bigen to hide my premature grayness. For some old reason the end of my individual hair strands have knots and my hair tangles up at the ends causing breakage this use to only happen when my hair became shoulder length in recent yrs. i notice with my short hair cuts they are there when my hair grows into a small afro (length that allows for small twistees).I don’t know how to stop these knots. I don’t trim ends because b4 these knots it has nvr help me grow longer length hair. I am now trying to grow my hair out from a low hair cut ( the lowest length u can go w/o going bald, due to breakage i always find myself cutting my hair every 2-3yrs this length and i am tired of it. i desperately need your help). The hair thinning i described earlier i was told my Hiroshima K, hair growth specialist, after send her pics. that i may have traction alopecia due to improper usage of permanent hair dyes(may have been to strong, and improper usage).Once i have insurance i will seek medical help. if your site allowed attachments i will send u pics. Immediately after being told i consulted w/a licensed beautician who informed it just look like hair thinning, but left me w/a warning that she is not a medical professional to follow inquiries w/one. My hair has never grown even my sides were always my problem areas, slow growth. But when i had taken my twistees out and just hot combing and curling my ends my top crown did show great thinning. I nvr had problems w/my top. I want to dye my hair,i am a premature grayer (since 8th grade). I started dying my hair in my mid to late 20s. I am now 43yrs old. Help I need to know what to do now I have been wearing my hair in protective styling, keeping my hair wrapped out of the sun, wind, and bedtime. Using conditioner to wash hair,f/u with Queene Helene Cholesterol Conditioning Tx. I am going all natural, first, moisturize and oil ends. I read somewhere that said don’t put any products on scalp. But isn’t that skin does it not have to moisturized at least to prevent dryness. It has almost been a week since I have been informed about traction alopecia. I am washing my hair every week or should i wash it every 2wks? Afterwards i will put it into twistees a protective hair style. I am so scared I need my hair to grow and be strong. I need to know how to care for my hair to ensure success. Also, recommend books and all natural products that don’t contain ingredients that contradicts the products usage. God Speed

The skin on the scalp contains sebacus glands which produce a natural oil. This oil moisturizes the scalp sufficiently enough. You should focus on only moisturizing the hair. Try using the UBH Hair Lotion or Dew located on ubhpublcations.com. You should also use her conditioner as well. Is your hair double processed because this could also be a cause for the hair thinning?

If you moisturize the ends and use a satin bonnet or scarf at night, it should prevent the hair knots. Let me know if you need anymore answers.

Can I apply olive oil to my scalp for the dryness?

The scalp produces an efficient amount of sebum to moisturize your scalp. Try an uplifing shampoo such as Organic Root Stimulator Uplifting Shampoo and deep condition with the ORS Hair Mayonnaise. Olive oil is okay to apply directly to the hair only.

I am 55 years old with gray hair. After 28 years I allowed a professional stylist to relax my hair, I really miss natural hair; why did I ever do that has been my constant question? But what I’d like to know is what product you’d recommend I can use in a home relaxer kit for gray hair. Also my hair is past my shoulders but is breaking on the very top and my scalp itches as well; how can I prevent breakage there and is this a result of my scratching my scalp relentlessly?
    Thank you so much.

I believe the issue may be from the constant scratching. What kind of shampoo are you using? Are you using grease on your scalp? These could be the reasons why your scalp itches. The first issue to be addressed is why your scalp itches so much. I don’t encourage home relaxing because you can easily make a mistake and overlap the relaxer on previously relaxed hair resulting in more damage in breakage. I suggest going to a professional. If you must do it at home have a friend help you apply the relaxer. I like Phytorelaxer out of all the relaxers I’ve tried in the past.
