Shampooing Black Hair

Written by Samara on September 16, 2008

I no longer recommend the use of shampoo’s containing sulfate’s unless it’s used to clarify the hair once a month.

Have you ever wondered what is the best type of shampoo to use on your relaxed black hair? Well the answer to this question is a shampoo that carries the right pH balance for relaxed black hair. To make sure you are using the right pH balanced shampoo just check the label for the following words and/or phrases:

  • Dry
  • Damaged
  • Chemically Treated
  • Relaxed

The shampoo must say dry, chemically treated or relaxed and damaged. This is the easiest way to make sure you are using the right type of shampoo, however, do not use shampoos that say conditioning. You can’t properly cleanse your hair and condition it at the same time because the conditioner will coat the hair and cause it not to come clean.

The shampoos that I recommend are the Come Clean Shampoo by Kinky-Curly.com Aphogee Shampoo for Damaged Hair and Motions CPR Shampoo Culicious Cleansing Cream by Curls.biz.

To properly wash the hair limit it to one lathering and rinse thoroughly to avoid drying out the hair. Using too much shampoo can be harsh on the hair. It isn’t the water that drys out the hair, but it’s the shampoo that can do this! You should also wash you hair every 3 days to a week. Going beyond a week isn’t recommended because you hair needs the moisture from the water and the longer you go without a shampooing and a conditioning treatment the drier the hair will become.

Remember to look for a shampoo that is recommended for our hair type and shampoo with one lathering every 3-7 days!

If this product is working well for you you can still use it. I just don’t recommend shampoo’s that use sulfate’s any longer for African American hair because it can be harsh on our hair.

I figured out the answer to my question: they both have sodium sulfate right, which is also why you stopped recommending the L’oreal Vive hydra gloss.

Yes, that’s absolutely right. I just want black women to use the best products for our help. Those chemicals are not good for already try hair. They can cause tight dry scalp, and dry out the hair as well.
