One thing can't be addressed enough. In addition to other issues, proper nutrition is not as it should be among so many of us. Obviously this is an issue with Americans overall. But with black folks, it has long been an overriding negative factor.

Having a full, healthy head of hair is next to impossible without the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients the body needs just for proper support each day and so few of us actually get it compared to other groups. Hair needs a measure of these nutrients and it really suffers without them.

Not only won't hair grow properly in the first place, but brittleness, breakage, and other problems are amplified when the hair isn't being fed properly.

What seems like the hair not growing is many times actually breakage so severe that it can never get past a certain length.

Hi Samara,

I have a 20 year old whose hair will not grow for nothing. She has done everything from kinkies to weave, but she came home I pulled out the weave and put a kiddie perm in it. It wont even take a perm good. Help please help by giving suggestions but I wash it and oil it with Olive Oil, but come to find out after reading I shouldnt cause the first two ingredients are petrolatum (thats how its spelled) and mineral oil
Please help if you can Thanks

Well first, are you wanting to grow your hair relaxed or natural?

Even relaxed hair needs a rest and if you going from style to style or chemical to chemical it isn't going to help any. You should start off by creating your own haircare set complete with a good deep conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, sulfate free shampoo, and an everyday moisturizer. Also choose an oil to seal in moisture. Relaxed hair should also be worn in protective styles because it is more prone to breakage due to the fact that it is treated with chemicals. There is tons of information to grow your relaxed or natural hair on this site. Just choose a section on the top menu to get started. Goodluck!!

hi! i was wondering if i could flat iron my hair cause im biracial and have a perm and put curling gel in it to mouisturize it cause when i dont its really dry and frizy and like an afro but when i put in the curling gel its hangs down in smooth shiny silky like loose curls. So could a flat iron it? or would that dry it out and damage it?

If you choose to flat iron your hair you need to protect it first. My suggestion is to deep conditon your hair first. Then apply Biosilk to the hair prior to using heat. DO NOT use oil until after you flat iron it. and don't flat iron wet or damp hair.
